In Honor of Nurses !

America's Daughters have answered the call to Duty, Honor, Country throughout History.

Nurse Corps (United States Army)

The United States Army Nurse Corps (NC) was formally established by the U.S. Congress in 1901. It is one of the six medical Special Branches (or "Corps") of officers which – along with medical enlisted soldiers – comprise the Army Medical Department (AMEDD).

VHP Director Issues Call for Women’s War Stories

“Women of Four Wars,” a new online presentation accessible on the Veterans History Project Web site, is a call to action for volunteer interviewers to record the stories of America’s female wartime veterans. “Thanks to volunteers nationwide, the Library of Congress has preserved the recollections of more than 55,000 veterans,” said Bob Patrick, director of the Veterans History Project. “Yet, fewer than 4,000 of those interviews are from women. We need more personal accounts from female veterans, and we need the American public to record them.”

Approximately two to five thousand women, North and South served as volunteer nurses during the Civil War.
These brave women choose an actively supportive role in the war effort thus opening a career door to women that was formerly reserved to males.
They experienced the grim results of war, mutilated bodies, amputated limbs, disease and death.
There were more than 620,000 deaths and ten million cases of illness during the war.
Through their sacrifices they provided invaluable aid to everyone they touched.

WOMEN NURSES IN THE CIVIL WAR

"You have given your boys to die for their country; now you can give your girls to nurse them."
(Nurse Mary Stinebaugh to her father in 1863)

Some historians believe that somewhere between 3,000 and 8,000 women volunteered their services as nurses throughout the duration of the Civil War, the majority of them being from northern states.
However, such an estimate is questionable due to the fact that several nurses, upon receiving appointments, refused to have their names recorded in the official books.
Mrs. M. J. Boston once said to the surgeon she was working under, "I do not want any pay for my services.
I only try to do all I can for the soldiers." Other women who made similar decisions found it even more difficult to collect pensions later in their lives.
With the lack of documentation, it is nearly impossible to claim the exact number of women who performed duty as nurses.
Yet, we do know that their work was greatly appreciated by the men they cared for. John G. B. Adams, once the National Commander of the G.A.R., expressed that the memory of these nurses "will ever live in the hearts of the veterans they nursed with such tender care."

Nurses in the first times of World War one

In 1901 and 1908 the establishment of the Army and Navy Nurse Corps opened the door for women in the military but ever so slightly. It wasn't until the United States got involved in World War One that some parts of the government got serious about using woman power.

World War I Nurses: The Journal of Emma Elizabeth Weaver

“This Is How It Was”: An American Nurse in France During World War I
Ellen N. La Motte was one of the first American nurses to serve in a French field hospital during World War I.

Many of the women who served in these wars—nurses in hospitals and on hospital ships—saw the results of combat and exposure to unforgiving climates reflected in their patients.
And sense Vietnam,

The armed forces of the U.S. opened up many specialties to women. Although women are still restricted from combat, the nature of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, with blurred lines of engagement, have placed more servicewomen in harm’s way.

1941 - In 1941, Frissell volunteered her photographic services to the American Red Cross.

Toni Frissell, or Antoinette Frissell Bacon, (March 10, 1907 - April 17, 1988) was an American photographer, known for her fashion photography, World War II photographs, portraits of famous Americans and Europeans, children, and women from all walks of life.

World War II

In 1941, Frissell volunteered her photographic services to the American Red Cross. Later she worked for the Eighth Army Air Force and became the official photographer of the Women's Army Corps. On their behalf, she took thousands of images of nurses, front-line soldiers, WACs, African-American airmen, and orphaned children. She traveled to the European front twice. Her moving photographs of military women and African American fighter pilots in the elite 332d Fighter Group (the "Tuskegee Airmen") were used to encourage public support for women and African Americans in the military.

General History

While the Nurse Corps was founded in 1901 as a component of the army, women have served as nurses and care-givers in American conflicts from the colonial period on. By World War II, the Army Nurse Corps was poised to take on increasing responsibilities. With fewer than 1,000 nurses on December 7, 1941, more than 59,000 nurses would serve before the war ended. Because of an acute shortage of nurses, a plan was developed to meet the demand through a draft. However, the war ended before this plan was implemented. Nurses served throughout the world, in all theaters, on land, sea, and air, and under combat conditions. Among those captured when US forces surrendered in the Philippines were 67 nurses. These nurses were liberated in February 1945. Sixteen nurses died as a result of hostile fire. Four nurses were awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry under fire at Anzio; one award was posthumous. During World War II only females could serve in the Army Nurse Corps. An early quota limiting the number of African American women who could serve as nurses was eliminated, but these nurses faced discrimination until segregation in the military services was ended by President Truman's Executive Order in 1948. Although nurses were in the army, their status was not equal to those of male officers. The inequities of rank remaining were removed with the passage of the Army-Navy Nurses' Act of 1947 (Public Law 36) allowing nurses to become part of the Regular Army.

In reclaiming women's history, their contribution during World War II is frequently overlooked. Here are the statistics in this area: More than 100 military nurses were captured when Bataan and Corregidor fell to the Japanese in 1942. Sixty-six Army Nurses and eleven Navy Nurses remained in a Japanese concentration camp for 37 months, more than three years! Sixteen hundred Army Nurses and 565 WACS received combat decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medals, Silver Stars, Bronze Stars, Air Medals, Legions of Merit, Commendation Medals, and Purple Hearts.

During the battle on Anzio, six Army Nurses were killed by German bombing, strafing and shelling of the tented hospital area. Four Army Nurses among the survivors were awarded Silver Stars for extraordinary courage under fire. In all, more than 200 Army Nurses lost their lives during World War II. Seventeen of those valiant women are buried in American cemeteries in foreign lands. -- Evelyn Kennedy.

CHAPTER IV - The Army Nurse Corps

Before World War II, training programs for Army nurses were few and were designed only to prepare nurses for clinical or functional assignments and not to provide military training. Indeed, between 1920, when they were granted relative rank as officers, and July 1944, when they received full commissions, nurses enjoyed only quasi-military status. Even membership in the Army's Reserve components, authorized for all other Medical Department corps, was denied them. Reasons offered for this peculiar arrangement in 1935 help to explain not only the absence of a Reserve corps for nurses, but also the quasi-military status of nurses and their lack of military training:

Camp Croft, South Carolina US Army Infantry Replacement Training Center Women's Army Corps (WAC) Detachment

For the first three years of the camp's existence, Croft was staffed with only male military personnel, the only exception being nurses in the station hospital. In January 1944, a Women's Army Corps (WAC) detachment was organized and assigned to duties in the hospital, replacing men who had performed the same tasks. This first contingent of WACs served primarily as administrative and clerical staff, although at times they were assigned to duty in the hospital wards as nurse's aides as well as duties outside of the hospital. Less than four months later, on 8 APR 44, a second detachment was organized for administrative work in the IRTC headquarters. By November 1944, the IRTC detachment was disbanded only to be reorganized in March 1945 and remained in place until October after news was released that the camp would soon close. Aside from their efficient execution of numerous and varied tasks, a very important part of the WACs role was to replace able bodied men who were needed for overseas assignments. The women also staffed WAC recruiting booths in town, encouraging young Spartanburg women to join their ranks.
